EPILOGUE: Landis kept his word, ordering the destruction of any evidence that Cooper ever played a major league game. His efforts to erase Cooper’s legacy were aided by the player himself, since after his long walk through Chicago, he simply disappeared.

Interestingly, about ten years after the Chicago showdown, rumors started circulating around Midwestern feed stores about a farmer from Broken Bow, Nebraska who once whittled a canoe with a pocketknife and lassoed a bronco with a shoelace… but that’s another story.
